Is Your Coffee Shop Business Plan Missing a USP?
Too many people who start new businesses don’t put any thought into what their USP (Unique Selling Proposition) is going to be. They don’t come up with anything that distinguishes them from the rest of the market.
For example, let’s take the fast food market. Each really successful fast food chain has their own USP or, as you might refer to it, their catchy slogan. With Burger King, it’s “Have it YOUR way.” This implies that if you come to Burger King, you can get your burger made any way you like. Truth is, just about any fast food chain will custom make your order, but Burger King makes it their selling point.
There is a lot of competition out there, so why should somebody come to YOUR establishment over another. For example, if you’re starting a coffee shop, why should somebody drink YOUR coffee instead of say Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks? You need to come up with something that is unique and sets you apart. Otherwise,
you’re just going to be another name in the crowd.
You need a name…and a catchy one…one that stands out. And you need a selling point. “Better coffee”, “friendlier atmosphere”, “more than just the best coffee” and so on. Without it, you’re putting yourself at a disadvantage right from the start.
